Week 2 Reading Diary, Continued: The Wolf-Mother of Saint Ailbe

Story from Unit: Saints and Animals
The Wolf-Mother of Saint Ailbe By: Abbie Farwell Brown

This was my favorite story out of the week two readings. Not only because it had to do with wolves, but how it was about being true to the people you love. Alibi was there for his wolf family no matter what, just as his wolf family was there for him. Family doesn't always mean to be blood related. Family to me is someone who will always be there and care for you. The wolf mother took in Saint Ailbe when no one else wanted him. Then Ailbe saved his mother wolf when her life was about to be taken. In the story it tells how Ailbe return the same love and care to his mother wolf as she did to him. When the mother wolf found Ailbe he was nothing but a little baby, the wolf knew he needed help. Many people see wolves to be cruel animals, yet there are many stories of humans being raised by wolves. Then you have the saying a dog is a mans best friends; yet dogs and wolves are descents. I believe humans and wolves to be more similar than most would think. In the story the wolf never had any intrusions to harm the boy. The mother wolf raised Ailbe as one of her own and Ailbe learned the ways of the wolf.

In the story Ailbe becomes a very respected and wise Bishop in his town of Emly. The wolf is also known for being highly wise. I like to think that because he was raised by the wolves that he developed this wisdom and talked he had. He was seen as great to the other people. I like to think he was so great because he saw things different, thought in different ways and had different connections than most people. Alibi was not your commonly raise boy. He had the heart of a wolf.
