Growth Mindset: Open your mind with a new perspective

CCC
For this weeks growth mindset challenge I choose to do a memo on, open your mind with a new perspective. Once I read this title I knew I wanted to do this challenge. A few years back I used to be pretty closed minded compared to how I am now. I tried to stay away from things I did't know and people who seemed different that I was.

Perspective Quote

Then I grew up and learned a whole lot. I learned that stepping into new things is a great way to learn. It is also a great way to meet new people and get to know yourself. I have been on a few interesting journey in the past few years that have open my mind in way I never could have imagined.

In this challenge there is an article, Three Cognitive Biases. The article talks about the three biases and a solution to each one.

 1. Confirmation Bias:
This is the bias that your thought, memories and beliefs are intangible. You tend to reinforce rather than challenge these beliefs. "It is the tendency to search for interpret information in a way that confirms with one's existing beliefs or preconceptions. " (Further Article)
Solution- Open your mind. Take time to think about the other side of the story, you do not necessarily have to accept it though. Just attempt to understand.

2. Conservatism Bias
This is "evidence that the Earth is round instead of flat" conservatism bias is "often discussed in the realm of investing, where even professionals react too slowly yo new information." (Further Article)
Solution- Act quickly to adapt in the face of a new contrary indication. Or, take time to verify but make sure you make a move.

3. Conformity Bias
Conformity bias is "the tendency to behave similarly to the others in a group, even if doing so goes against your own judgment.: (Further Article)
Solution- Have courage to act accordingly to your own conditions.

What bias are you?

As of now I am a very open minded person. I will ask anyone and everyone involved their side of the story before I make any judgments or assumption. I want to make sure everyone had a fair chance. I will also try my best to take the time and understand why someone took action the way they did. I ask myself is there something I may not know? I am also integer by people that are different then me. I find it very interesting to learn why they are that way. With each new experience I go though and each new person I meet I always try to take something with me. Weather it be a new life lesson, a new way to cook, or a different way sometime thinks. It's all a part of what makes me who I am.

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."

Growth Mindset: Dweck Interview / Tech Tip: Embedded Youtube

This weeks growth mindset challenge was very interesting. I watched a video by, Carol Dweck: Mindset Interview . In this interview Professor Dweck talks about how there are two groups of people; one is those going around the world curios to learn, the other group is going around trying to look and feel smart. The group that wants to feel smart bases their action off of weather or not they will be seen as intelligent. This group doesn't want to be laughed at or seen as stupid. Yet, Dweck says, "nobody laughs at a baby saying how stupid they are." It is because people know babies are new to the world and still learning. Shouldn't this go for everyone at every age though?

In my point of view you can never stop learning! Every day there is so much out in the world you can learn. Weather it be form school, friends, experiences, or on your travels. Everyone has their own pace they are traveling at. So, remember this next time you may laugh or mock someone. They might now they answer to the question you are experienced in. Yet, maybe you don't know much about what they are experienced in. This is why meeting new people is such a great experience for me. Every person has their own unique story and own knowledge. They may know something no one else does. They only way to share that is if you get to know them and listen to what they have to say.

Back to Professor Dweck's interview, she help an eight session workshop with a class of students. Half of these students were taught growth mindset study skills, the other half were just taught study skills. The half that where taught with growth mindset learned that the mind is like a muscle. The mind can get stronger as it growth with knowledge. At the end of the semester the student with the growth mind set skills showed an advancement, compared to the students who did not learn the great mindset.

At the end of Dweck's interview she told us how a race car driver contacted her after learning about her growth mindset teachings. He agreed with her about growth mindset and said it even applied on the race track. The difference in a winning driver compared to a losing driver is how they act upon the mistakes they make through the long race. The ones who could recover would be the winners, the ones who had a growth mindset. Dweck also say that in the business world flexibility of a growth mindset is essential.  She say, "you can't keep up with the changes in the world f you can't grow and can't learn."

Remember never be afraid to learn and open your mind to different possibilities.

Growth Mindset: Attitude Over Intelligence

Positivity Is Key

I choose to do a Growth Mindset leaning over  Why attitude is more important than intelligence. This article was wrote by Travis Bradberry, published by Entrepreneur.com.
In the article Travis mentioned  several key points to why attitude can have a large impact on intelligence as well as improving the growth mindset. I placed each key point in bold below with my favorite line Travis wrote for each key point.

Don't Stay Helpless

"People with a growth mindset don’t feel helpless because they know that in order to be successful, you need to be willing to fail hard and then bounce right back."
Be Passionate
"What you lack in talent, you can make up for in passion."

Take Action

"Taking action turns all your worry and concern about failure into positive, focused energy."
Go the extra mile
"Bruce explained it this way: “Quit and you might as well be dead. If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there; you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”
Expect Results
"Expecting results keeps you motivated and feeds the cycle of empowerment."

Be Flexible

"People with an empowerment, growth-oriented mindset embrace adversity as a mean for improvement."

Don't complain wen things don't go your way

"A growth mindset looks for opportunity in everything, so there's no room for complaints."

I have learned that even the littlest of an attitude change can make a difference. There is always a positive side you just have to find it. Every journey starts with one step. I had already learned from past experiences that if you find a positive to the situation you will find yourself at ease. When i find myself getting stressed, having a worth day, getting gin trouble I stop and think for a moment. I think about the situation, then find something that is positive about it. I have truly learned you can always find the positivity you just have to look and think hard enough. If you focus more on the positive it leave little room left for the negative. I am pleased that i choose this growth mindset challenge to remind my self to always look for the up side, don't complain (be grateful for the good in your life), its alright to go with the flow sometimes, stay motivated by expecting results, push yourself by going the extra mile (or miles), passion can go a long way, and failure comes with success!

Growth Mindset

Its all about how you look at the situation. If you start of with a negative mind the outcome will be negative. I you start of with an open mind the possibilities are endless.

Growth mindset, is something I fully believe in and will support. Growing up I had a more than average strict father. He always expected the best. He always told me that if you are going to do something you should win. I was pushed a lot ever since I can remember. With that being said there is no doubt that I would try even harder to succeed. On the other hand I would always hind my failures from him. Even second place, wasn't a win. Once I grew up and had more freedom, I expanded my mind. I wanted to try new things that I wasn't able to before. I was able to explore and step out of my comfort zone. I became alright with not being the best at everything. I learned everything new takes practice before you can become better. You must start with the basics before you can become a master. The more open minded you are with every aspect in life the more you can take in and learn. I always remind myself that you shouldn't say no until you've tried it.

"I am so grateful for my troubles. I have come to realize that my greatest triumph have been born of my greatest troubles." Quote By: Steven Maraboil - Photo By: Unsplace on pixabay

From my college experience I have grown a great deal as a student and an individual. With OU being the third college I have attended, I have experience many different college education environments. Seeing many different ways people teach then combining all the great tips, advice, and help has advanced me as a student. As an individual I have been more open minded in trying new things. I like to think that you never know if there is a better way until you try a different way. Another on elf my so called life rules are always try the food before you say you don't like it. I think I used to be the pickiest eater I have ever known. Then I told myself, hey how do you know that food won't last amazing? Now i am inspired by so many different types of food cultures and different ways to cook. My regret is not learning this sooner!

One of my goals for this semester is to take into view of how people learned way back in the being. Such as myths, forlorn, the bible and ancient tales. For example to grow a tree, you just plant a seed. Yet, if you know about the seed and what soil it grows best in the tree will grow better. If you know where that seed came from, and what environment the seed best grows in the seed will flourish. I want to learn my roots, as well as continue to learn new ways.
